This past weekend, the Center partnered with the Canarsie Coalition to host a Homeowner Assistance Day.
Canarsie homeowners have been among the hardest hit in the city, having faced the challenges of both the foreclosure crisis and Hurricane Sandy. In 2013, there were over 500 new foreclosure filings in Canarsie’s 11236 zip code, the most in the city. At this past weekend’s Homeowner Assistance Day, we saw homeowners grappling with both difficult decisions around rebuilding and the difficult task of fixing mortgages that have become unaffordable.
Over 100 homeowners from Canarsie and surrounding areas received free help. Counselors and legal service professionals as well as representatives from Ocwen, Wells Fargo, Citi Mortgage, and Bank of America answered questions about loan modifications and other available resources.
We would like to say a special thanks to the member organizations of the Canarsie Coalition including: Brooklyn Legal Services, Neighborhood Housing Services of East Flatbush, Bridge St. Development Corp., Pratt Area Community Council (PACC), CAMBA, Brooklyn Jubilee, and Brooklyn Housing & Family Services.
