EXCLUSIVE NYC SCREENING OF ‘ARC OF JUSTICE,’ ACCLAIMED DOCUMENTARY ABOUT THE COUNTRY’S FIRST COMMUNITY LAND TRUST
Co-founder Shirley Sherrod and filmmakers Helen S. Cohen and Mark Lipman to deliver remarks; panel discussion with Council Member Donovan Richards and leaders of the CLT movement in New York City.
NEW YORK — The acclaimed documentary “Arc of Justice,” which recounts the story of the New Communities Inc., in southwest Georgia, that pioneered the community land trust model, will receive an exclusive screening in New York City on Wednesday, March 15, 2017. Formed in 1969 during the Civil Rights movement, New Communities preserved the largest black-owned farm in the country, despite relentless opposition.
The film will be followed by remarks and a Q&A with New Communities co-founder Shirley Sherrod, as well as the filmmakers, Helen S. Cohen and Mark Lipman.
A panel discussion will close the night with Council Member Donovan Richards of the 31st District, which includes southeast Queens and the Rockaways; Valerio Orselli,
Executive Director of the Cooper Square Mutual Housing Association and Community Land Trust; and Mychal Johnson, Board Member of the NYC Community Land Initiative and the Mott Haven-Port Morris Community Land Stewards. Christie Peale, Executive Director of the Center for NYC Neighborhoods, will moderate.
From New York to California, communities struggling with a shortage of affordable housing are looking to the community land trust model of housing preservation, which ensures that home prices and rents stay within reach for low-income households.
The event is organized by the New School Urban @ Parsons, the Coalition for Affordable Homes, Open Studio Production, Cooper Square Mutual Housing Association/Community Land Trust and the Center for NYC Neighborhoods.
When: Wednesday, March 15th, 2017, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm
Where: The New School University Center, Room UL104, lower level, 63 5th Avenue, New York, NY
